Details
A great speculative fiction writer doesn't just create a fantastic world but also picks the perfect way to reveal that world. The opening lines are often used to tell us where we are, but sometimes the setting is revealed only late in the work, or hidden in clues that only the clever pick up on. Our guest authors will talk about their thought process in deciding how the reader will learn about the setting of your work. What kind of reaction are they hoping for from the reader? Sometimes we learn about the setting from sources outside the main narrative of a work. Interludes, appendices, maps, illustrations -- even the cover art often tells us what the people of this fantastic world look like. How can these other sources of information effectively be combined with the narrative's approach to revealing the world (or how can they be avoided)?
