Panel: Whose Folklore
Guest event run by Jason Brodsky
Time
Saturday, January 26 beginning at 3:00 PM and running until 4:15 PM
Location
Sever 113 (Guide to Locations)
Short Description
Come listen to Marie Brennan, Cassandra Clare, Elizabeth Haydon, and Donna Jo Napoli talk about folklore in fiction.
Details
A work of good fiction may have universal appeal, but the folklore or myths on which it's based once belonged to a specific group of people. The time, location, class, gender or age of the people who originally told a story might all be recognizable influences on a speculative fiction work inspired by that story. But, of course, people haven't stopped generating folklore. Not only does modern life generate some wholly new legends, but the popular imagination holds some very different takes on the old standbys of elves, dragons, fairies and the like than were present in centuries past. In what ways is building a story out of elements from the modern imagination different from drawing on historical folklore? Does modern folklore have a particular appeal that historical folklore lacks? How about vice versa?
