Panel: Dystopia

Guest event run by Jason Brodsky

Time

Friday, January 25 beginning at 7:30 PM and running until 8:45 PM

Location

Sever 113 (Guide to Locations)

Short Description

Come listen to Orson Scott Card, Jim Kelly, Kelly Link, and William Sleator talk about dystopia.

Details

From the political nightmares of 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 to the bleak future of cyberpunk novels, dystopian worlds are a common feature in speculative fiction. What is the appeal of reading (and writing) about a world we wouldn't want to live in? Dystopian fiction is a staple of high school english classes; what makes it so appealing to educators? Does it do anything to prevent the future it describes? And what role does technology play in dystopian fiction? Politics?
